This exhibition displays twenty black-and-white photographs from CAAM's permanent collection by the acclaimed African American photographer Tony Gleaton (1948–2015). The images examine aspects of the African Diaspora in several countries across Central America — Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama — contributing to a much-needed dialogue on the historical and sociological development of racial identity among its populations of African descent. For over fifteen years, Gleaton journeyed these lands to document the daily lives of diasporic peoples, capturing images filled with empowerment, dignity, and ethereal beauty. This exhibition is a tribute to Gleaton's foresight and dedication, and it carries a bittersweet significance in light of his death in August 2015.
