Education is vital to CAAM’s mission and role in the community. We offer dozens of year-round educational programming designed to spark the imagination of people of all ages and foster a lifelong love of the arts. Our programs for children, teens, and families include lectures, art-making workshops, films, gallery talks, and special events. We also offer curriculums for teachers and educators to encourage schools to participate in visits to the Museum. Please see below for more information and check our calendar to see updated listings.
Families
Looking for hands-on activities to do with your kids? CAAM offers various art-making workshops and programs designed for families to enjoy together. Each season, we offer our popular Makers Fest dedicated to exposing kids directly to artists who work in a variety of media. We also offer workshops inspired by exhibitions on view. Check our calendar for up-to-date listings and more details.
Teens
We want teenagers to engage with CAAM! Youth Now, our flagship program for teens, is a weekly event dedicated to teenagers from all over Los Angeles. Each week, we invite groups of teenagers to meet a creative mentor or change-maker from a variety of different disciplines. The students are encouraged to share what is important to them in their communities, ask questions about career paths, and engage in activities that help sharpen their own plans and interest in the arts. Some mentors include Brent Blair, Associate Professor of Theatre Practice at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, artist and activist Patrisse Khan-Cullors, artist and professor at the USC Roski School of Fine Arts Suzanne Lacy, and others.
Adults
Throughout the year, each of our exhibitions have dedicated public programming linked to the artworks on view. Our In Conversation events draw upon current exhibitions and encourage debate and thoughtful discussion. As a result of the renewed urgency in today’s political climate, we also offer an Activism Now series where we bring inspiring change-makers and multiple generations of activists to speak with the public about current challenges and opportunities. Artists
As a creative nexus for the community, we welcome artists at all stages in their career to connect with the Museum on multiple levels. We offer by-artist-for-artist workshops and professional development as well as other programming — and we always love to get ideas for workshops from you! To propose a workshop based on your practice for an upcoming Makers Fest, please contact Alexsandra Mitchell at amitchell@caamuseum.org with your contact info, a one paragraph description, and 3 images of your work. The workshop fee is determined by duration and activity. Artists are encouraged to use the Museum education department supplies; otherwise, a modest supply budget may be extended.
Schools
Our exhibitions reflect a unique perspective that is important for students to be exposed to. We encourage school administrators to bring classes of all ages to the museum or to reserve a guided tour with workshop options geared toward your group. Metro Transportation Assistance: Teachers and Parents! If you represent a Los Angeles County school, grades 1 through 12, you are eligible to participate in a Metro program covering transportation costs on Metro's public transit system. Visitors with Disabilities
Our museum is ADA accessible and offers a variety of sensory experiences and exhibitions. In addition, we offer special tours and workshops for groups with disabilities upon request.
