Can you name five women artists?
Since 2016, the National Museum of Women in the Arts has been asking this question on social media each March during Women's History Month using the hashtag #5WomenArtists. The campaign calls attention to the fact that women have historically not been treated equally in the art world, and remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in today's museums, galleries, and auction houses.
Black women are doubly underrepresented in this context, often absent from America's museums and erased from the art world's memory. To address these disparities, CAAM will be sharing biographies of five women artists who have shown at the museum.
Sula Bermúdez-Silverman
Sula Bermúdez-Silverman was born in New York and raised here in Los Angeles, where she currently lives and works. She earned her MFA in Sculpture from the Yale University School of Art in 2018 and her BA in Studio Art from Bard College in 2015. She also studied at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design in London in 2013. Bermúdez-Silverman is the recipient of the Susan H. Whedon Award (2018), the Nancy and Harry Koenigsberg Scholarship Award (2018), and the Alice Kimball English Traveling Fellowship (2017). In 2015, she was an Honorary Artist-in-Residence at Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas.
Bermúdez-Silverman's conceptual and multidisciplinary practice mines her intertwined personal, familial, and genetic histories as a woman of Afro-Puerto Rican and Jewish descent, and also considers the complex global questions of trade, commodification, and economic hierarchy that have shaped the African diaspora. Her practice had also had a long engagement with the politics of black hair, encompassing video, embroidered, and sculptural works.
