Bring the entire family to scan keepsakes, hear powerful stories of legacy, and learn about genealogy and how to preserve family treasures through archiving.

The Mobile Memory Lab Pop-Up Scanning Station
Bring photographs, negatives, letters, diaries, and other keepsakes that chronicle your family and community’s history in Los Angeles, and staff from the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) will digitize them and provide you with archival-quality copies on a take-home USB drive. With user consent, digitized items that relate to LA history may be added to the LAPL collection and featured in their online portal, Tessa. Limit of five single-sided items per person. Black Families in LA: Leon Hefflin
Deborah Swan shares the inspiring LA story of her late grandfather, Leon Hefflin, who produced Cavalcade of Jazz at Wrigley Field, a festival featuring more than 125 artists that was one of the largest outdoor concerts in America during the 1940s and 1950s.

Genealogy Workshop
Presented by the California African American Genealogical Society, two concurrent sessions, one for adults and one for children, will explain how to jump-start family history research. Adults will explore how African Americans can locate information resources, including census records and birth certificates, and how to identify slaveholders. Children will learn the importance of examining their family's past and how to create family tree records. Both groups will receive tools to continue research beyond the sessions.

Preserving Family Treasures
Discover how best to preserve, maintain, and store your family treasures for generations to come, and learn interview techniques to help capture fond memories and important moments in your family's history. Presented by CAAM’s Research Librarian, Denise L. Mc Iver.
