02:00 PM – 04:00 PM
On the day after WordTheatre’s presentation of Witness: The John Edgar Wideman Experience at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, this acclaimed writer and MacArthur Fellow talks with David Ulin, former Los Angeles Times book editor, amidst the backdrop of artist Gary Simmons’s monumental mural, Fade to Black. Wideman has authored numerous works including Writing to Save a Life: The Louis Till File and the forthcoming American Histories. Simmons’s site-specific painting addresses race, class, and memory using the language of American popular culture, forcefully echoing Wideman's chronicle of contemporary black experience.
