Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, and artist Gary Simmons, who created the large-scale installation Fade to Black in CAAM’s grand lobby, have a friendship spanning more than twenty years. Golden and Simmons, who have worked together on several projects including the historically important Black Male exhibition at the Whitney Museum in 1994, illuminate how Simmons’s CAAM exhibition fits within the larger trajectory of his career.
